Purpose of This Blog

When I was a child, my mother used to visit an elderly shut-in whose family rarely visited her. When you're seven, the last place you want to be is visiting an elderly shut-in. "Mom, why do we have to visit Mrs. Murphy again?" Her answer, "Well, if I visit a lonely elderly person now, when I'm older God will make sure somebody's there to take care of me." Mom was right (as she was about so many things, just don't tell her I said that!). What you give comes back to you. As I got older, and became ill, I got a taste of what it was like to need help myself, to be treated as one of "the least of these" as it says in the Bible. Jesus said, "Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers (or sisters), you do to me." I've found that very few individuals, even many Christians, live by that verse. And I became determined I would no longer look away when I saw someone in need of help. Of course, like most, I hold no celebrity status, no position of power or influence, and have barely enough money to get by myself. But I've found that I could make small donations, sign petitions, buy gifts for bithdays and special occasions where part or all of the proceeds went to a good cause. It became a hobby, a passion. It also lifted my spirits, as nothing is more depressing than sitting around and thinking about yourself and your own problems. If you're interested in finding low-cost or free ways to give back yourself, a great guidebook is Nicole Bouchard-Boles "How To Be An Everyday Philanthropist". I will link to her blog on here..she's really the professor here, and I'm just the student. I will try not to repeat any of the information in her book, but link to products, charities, online petitions that I believe in. Signing an online petition is free, and takes only a couple of minutes. Petitions are sent to and read by our Congressmembers and Senators here in America, so they do make a difference. I hope also to link with others with the same interest. I will also be linking to other websites, news stories, and blogs that I find of interest and related to issues of poverty, human rights, and social justice. As I said, I am very ill, and my illness will prevent me from blogging as much as I'd like, but I do hope you find any information that I provide helpful. Thank you for visiting! :)
